- Prop 30 - Education Protection Act | Sunol Glen School
Proposition 30, also known as the Education Protection Act, was a California ballot measure passed in 2012. It increased the state sales tax by 0.25% and raised income taxes on individuals earning over $250,000 annually, with the goal of funding public education, including K-12 schools and community colleges, as well as supporting public safety services. The revenue from this proposition was intended to ensure stability for education programs in the face of budget cuts. Home > Prop 30 - Education Protection Act > Education Protection Act Prop 30 Budget & Aduit Reports Expanded Learning Opportinutes Grant ESSER III Plan LREBG Expenditure Report Prop 28 - Arts & Music Prop 30 - Education Protection Act The Education Protection Act (EPA) is a law that was passed in California in 2012 to ensure that certain state funding for K-12 public schools is used specifically for educational purposes. It was part of a broader initiative following the passage of Proposition 30, which increased taxes in order to stabilize the state's budget and prevent cuts to education. Under the EPA, a portion of the revenue from the increased taxes (mainly on higher-income earners and sales taxes) is designated for K-12 education, and school districts are required to spend these funds on direct services to students, such as hiring teachers, maintaining classrooms, and improving educational programs. The key idea behind the EPA is to protect education funding from being diverted to other state budget needs. The law also includes transparency provisions, requiring school districts to report how these funds are being spent and ensuring they are used for educational purposes rather than administrative costs or other non-instructional activities. - Instructional Tools and Student Privacy | Sunol Glen School
Instructional tools refer to digital resources, platforms, and software used by educators to enhance teaching and support student learning, such as learning management systems, educational apps, and interactive tools. Student privacy involves protecting personal and educational information about students, and ensuring that these tools and resources comply with privacy regulations like FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) to safeguard sensitive data from unauthorized access or misuse Home > Instructional Tools and Student Privacy > Online Instructional Tools and Student Privacy Submit a Tech Ticket System Status Online Instructional Tools and Student Privacy At Sunol Glen School, we use a variety of digital tools and resources to help our students learn and grow. Many of these tools are apps, websites, and electronic databases that allow us to store and access important information. Our students will use these digital tools in the classroom and for homework assignments. These resources are a big part of our educational program, helping students think critically, collaborate with peers and teachers, create content, and explore lessons based on the Common Core State Standards. Some of these tools may store personal and confidential information. As a small school, Sunol Glen School takes the privacy and security of our students and families very seriously. We are committed to protecting personal information and have taken steps to keep students’ data safe both within and outside of our network. We’ve put safeguards in place to protect students' personally identifiable information (PII) when it’s stored on our systems. This includes securing the data while it’s on our servers, during its transfer, and limiting access to it to staff who need it to support students' education. When we work with outside service providers, we ensure they have strong security measures in place for the servers that store our students' PII. This is part of our responsibility under California Education Code 49073.1 (AB1584), which requires contracts with service providers to outline specific data protection protocols. You can view these contracts on the California Student Data Privacy Alliance website (this site is updated regularly). We also require our service providers to follow security standards similar to our own to ensure that no unauthorized parties access students’ PII. Additionally, these providers must comply with privacy laws like FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) and COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act). COPPA and FERPA Compliance COPPA mandates that third-party service providers obtain parental consent before collecting personal information from children under the age of 13. Under this law, our school district can provide consent on behalf of all students, eliminating the need for individual consent from parents. COPPA also gives parents the right to opt their child out of online services. FERPA provides parents or guardians the right to inspect their student's records, including the PII stored in electronic systems. If you have concerns about your child’s use of online tools, we encourage you to speak with your school’s principal or teachers to learn more about how these systems are used and to inspect the stored information. If you are a parent or guardian and would prefer your child not to use certain electronic tools that store PII, you can opt-out by submitting a form available in the Student & Family Handbook . Please note that opting out may require your child to complete an alternative assignment, which will differ from the work given to other students. While we encourage the use of these tools to enhance a 21st-century learning experience, we recommend discussing any concerns with your principal or teachers before making the decision to opt-out. - Air Quality Index | Sunol Glen School
The Air Quality Index (AQI) is a scale used to measure and communicate the quality of the air in a specific area. It evaluates the levels of pollutants such as ozone, particulate matter, and carbon monoxide, providing a numerical value that indicates the potential health risks for the public, ranging from good air quality to hazardous levels. Home > Resources > Air Quality Index > Air Quality Index Sunol Glen School Air Quality School Year Sunol Glen School can stay open during most instances when smoke from wildfires is present in the East Bay. All classrooms are equipped with a MERV 13 HEPA Air Purification Unit that functions effectively with windows opened or closed. Additionally, filter upgrade work for poor air quality index levels has been completed on existing HVAC systems, including MERV 13 filtration. When necessary, students may have lunch, recess, and PE indoors, as they would during a rainy day. Determination of AQI Levels The district assesses AQI using several measurement and predictive tools. We use the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) measurement to determine our AQI response. This is what the Public Health Department advises the District to use to report local AQI conditions to our school community and to make decisions. BAAQMD also provides advisory messages when poor air quality is forecast. For more accurate AQI levels, please visit: https://www.airnow.gov/?city=Sunol&state=CA&country=USA Poor Air Quality In summary: At AQI levels between 51-100, sensitive individuals (those with asthma or heart/lung conditions) should be observed to ensure they are able to manage their conditions. At AQI levels between 101-150, sensitive individuals should exercise indoors or avoid vigorous activities. Teachers may elect to close windows, based on local conditions or when observing how their students are managing this. AQI level. At AQI levels between 151-200, classroom windows will be closed and students will eat and exercise during the school day indoors. Schools will select the largest available indoor space(s) for lunch and maximize the spacing of students to the extent possible. At AQI levels over 201, Sunol Glen School leadership will meet to consider closing schools as a safety measure. Decisions about school closures for very high AQI-level events will take place on a case-by-case basis, given that every situation is unique. It may be the case that AQI events are further complicated by a PG&E Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) due to wind conditions in the East Bay. A power outage at School Glen School could impact the school’s ability to implement the COVID-19 safety precautions described in the preceding paragraphs.
