Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP)

The Expanded Learning Opportunities (ELO) Grant was introduced as part of the 2021-2022 California State Budget. The state allocated funding to expand access to high-quality, after-school, summer, and intersession programs for K-12 students, particularly focusing on addressing learning loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The ELO Grant is designed to support programs that serve students during non-school hours and provide enriching activities beyond the typical school day.

Key Features of ELO Grant:

  1. Eligibility: The grant targets students in grades K-6, with a focus on supporting those who are from low-income families, English learners, foster youth, and other students who may be at risk academically or socially.

  2. Funding Allocation: In California, the ELO Grant is distributed to school districts based on enrollment, with districts receiving additional funds if they have higher numbers of students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

  3. Program Requirements:

    • Before- and After-School Programs: Districts must offer programs that are accessible to all students, with specific outreach to underserved populations.

    • Summer Programs: Funds are used to extend learning during summer months to prevent learning loss and keep students engaged.

    • Intersession Programs: Schools can offer educational opportunities during breaks, such as winter or spring breaks, to provide additional support to students who need it.

The Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P) at Sunol Glen Unified School District provides an after-school program for transitional kindergarten through sixth-grade students. Funded by the California Department of Education, ELO-P focuses on academic support and personal development, offering hands-on, engaging learning experiences that address students’ educational, social-emotional, and physical needs. Priority enrollment is given to students with the highest needs, including those who are homeless, foster youth, economically disadvantaged, or Emerging Bilingual.

In addition to academic enrichment, the program offers a variety of extracurricular activities such as arts and crafts, recreational programs, and physical activities that foster creativity, teamwork, and personal growth. ELO-P ensures students have access to a safe, supportive environment before and after school and during school breaks.

This program is a key part of our district's commitment to providing well-rounded, inclusive educational experiences for all students.
