- Attendance Policy | Sunol Glen School
An attendance policy outlines the rules and expectations regarding student attendance in school. It typically includes guidelines on acceptable reasons for absence, the process for notifying the school, and consequences for unexcused absences, aiming to promote consistent student participation and academic success. Home > Resources > Attendance Policy > Attendance Policy Dear Parents/Guardians: In an effort to stress the importance of daily school attendance, we would like to remind you that California Education Law 48200 requires compulsory daily attendance for students 6-18 years of age. Parents/guardians who choose to enroll their children in Kindergarten are subject to this Education Code Law as well. Sunol Glen Unified School District is committed to ensuring academic excellence for our students. Maximizing our children’s achievement must begin with daily school attendance and we feel this is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that success. Daily school attendance must start at home with the importance and value of education being stressed. It is vital for the Sunol Glen Unified School District to build on this value by maintaining the essential partnership between school and home to ensure daily attendance. Our school day begins at 8:30 am. Children are expected to be in their seat and ready to learn at that time. Students are also expected to stay the entire day, which is 8:30 am – 2:50 pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and 8:30 am – 2 pm on Wednesday. All minimum-day dismissals are at 12:00 pm. If your child is absent, you are required to call the school attendance clerk at 925-862-2026 . California Education Code ALLOWS EXCUSED absence for the following five reasons: 1. Illness 2. Medical, dental, and eye appointments (please try & schedule these before or after school) 3. Quarantine (determined by medical professional) 4. Funeral services for immediate family members 5. Court-ordered appearance (filed and signed) The parent/guardian of the student must send a note, email and/or phone the school to clear any of the above-listed excused absences. Failure to excuse the absence will result in a recorded truancy on the student’s permanent record. Be advised that any excused or unexcused absences over ten days are considered excessive. Another way to ensure your child’s daily attendance is by reviewing the school district calendar to plan family holidays and vacations to coincide with school holidays. Parent notification to the school of a student’s absence for a family vacation will result in the loss of instructional time, and parents will be notified of truancy violations as determined by California Ed Code 48200. Some other examples of reasons for absences that are NOT EXCUSED are: ● Visiting Relatives ● Student’s Birthday ●Oversleeping ●Car trouble ● Child care by student at home ● Vacations ● Family moving from one home to another School staff may request your attendance at a conference when your child is absent from school for reasons that are not excused. The district sends notification to parents/guardians of students who accumulate three or more days of unexcused absences and/or tardies. That letter will inform family of potential declaration of truancy on your child’s school record according to Education Code 48260. Please review this attendance information with your child and take the necessary measures to correct any attendance problems. We appreciate your assistance in making school attendance a priority. Thank you for your support. The Sunol Glen Unified School District

- Air Quality Index | Sunol Glen School
The Air Quality Index (AQI) is a scale used to measure and communicate the quality of the air in a specific area. It evaluates the levels of pollutants such as ozone, particulate matter, and carbon monoxide, providing a numerical value that indicates the potential health risks for the public, ranging from good air quality to hazardous levels. Home > Resources > Air Quality Index > Air Quality Index Sunol Glen School Air Quality School Year Sunol Glen School can stay open during most instances when smoke from wildfires is present in the East Bay. All classrooms are equipped with a MERV 13 HEPA Air Purification Unit that functions effectively with windows opened or closed. Additionally, filter upgrade work for poor air quality index levels has been completed on existing HVAC systems, including MERV 13 filtration. When necessary, students may have lunch, recess, and PE indoors, as they would during a rainy day. Determination of AQI Levels The district assesses AQI using several measurement and predictive tools. We use the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) measurement to determine our AQI response. This is what the Public Health Department advises the District to use to report local AQI conditions to our school community and to make decisions. BAAQMD also provides advisory messages when poor air quality is forecast. For more accurate AQI levels, please visit: https://www.airnow.gov/?city=Sunol&state=CA&country=USA Poor Air Quality In summary: At AQI levels between 51-100, sensitive individuals (those with asthma or heart/lung conditions) should be observed to ensure they are able to manage their conditions. At AQI levels between 101-150, sensitive individuals should exercise indoors or avoid vigorous activities. Teachers may elect to close windows, based on local conditions or when observing how their students are managing this. AQI level. At AQI levels between 151-200, classroom windows will be closed and students will eat and exercise during the school day indoors. Schools will select the largest available indoor space(s) for lunch and maximize the spacing of students to the extent possible. At AQI levels over 201, Sunol Glen School leadership will meet to consider closing schools as a safety measure. Decisions about school closures for very high AQI-level events will take place on a case-by-case basis, given that every situation is unique. It may be the case that AQI events are further complicated by a PG&E Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) due to wind conditions in the East Bay. A power outage at School Glen School could impact the school’s ability to implement the COVID-19 safety precautions described in the preceding paragraphs.
