  • Attendance Policy | Sunol Glen School

An attendance policy outlines the rules and expectations regarding student attendance in school. It typically includes guidelines on acceptable reasons for absence, the process for notifying the school, and consequences for unexcused absences, aiming to promote consistent student participation and academic success. Home > Resources > Attendance Policy > Attendance Policy Dear Parents/Guardians: In an effort to stress the importance of daily school attendance, we would like to remind you that California Education Law 48200 requires compulsory daily attendance for students 6-18 years of age. Parents/guardians who choose to enroll their children in Kindergarten are subject to this Education Code Law as well. Sunol Glen Unified School District is committed to ensuring academic excellence for our students. Maximizing our children’s achievement must begin with daily school attendance and we feel this is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that success. Daily school attendance must start at home with the importance and value of education being stressed. It is vital for the Sunol Glen Unified School District to build on this value by maintaining the essential partnership between school and home to ensure daily attendance. Our school day begins at 8:30 am. Children are expected to be in their seat and ready to learn at that time. Students are also expected to stay the entire day, which is 8:30 am – 2:50 pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and 8:30 am – 2 pm on Wednesday. All minimum-day dismissals are at 12:00 pm. If your child is absent, you are required to call the school attendance clerk at 925-862-2026 . California Education Code ALLOWS EXCUSED absence for the following five reasons: 1. Illness 2. Medical, dental, and eye appointments (please try & schedule these before or after school) 3. Quarantine (determined by medical professional) 4. Funeral services for immediate family members 5. Court-ordered appearance (filed and signed) The parent/guardian of the student must send a note, email and/or phone the school to clear any of the above-listed excused absences. Failure to excuse the absence will result in a recorded truancy on the student’s permanent record. Be advised that any excused or unexcused absences over ten days are considered excessive. Another way to ensure your child’s daily attendance is by reviewing the school district calendar to plan family holidays and vacations to coincide with school holidays. Parent notification to the school of a student’s absence for a family vacation will result in the loss of instructional time, and parents will be notified of truancy violations as determined by California Ed Code 48200. Some other examples of reasons for absences that are NOT EXCUSED are: ● Visiting Relatives ● Student’s Birthday ●Oversleeping ●Car trouble ● Child care by student at home ● Vacations ● Family moving from one home to another School staff may request your attendance at a conference when your child is absent from school for reasons that are not excused. The district sends notification to parents/guardians of students who accumulate three or more days of unexcused absences and/or tardies. That letter will inform family of potential declaration of truancy on your child’s school record according to Education Code 48260. Please review this attendance information with your child and take the necessary measures to correct any attendance problems. We appreciate your assistance in making school attendance a priority. Thank you for your support. The Sunol Glen Unified School District

  • Curriculum & Homework | Sunol Glen School

Curriculum and homework refer to the educational framework and assignments designed to support student learning. The curriculum outlines the subjects, topics, and skills to be taught during a school year, while homework consists of tasks assigned outside of class to reinforce lessons, encourage independent learning, and assess student understanding of the material. Home > Resources > Curriculum & Homework > Curriculum & Homework Homework Philosophy & Policy Sunol Glen holds to the belief that learning is a continuous process and as such, students should be provided ample opportunities to extend their learning from the classroom. Students are engaged in guided instruction while at school and are presented with new and reviewed content each day. To reinforce and further their understanding and to provide additional ‘practice’ of skills and concepts to promote retention of knowledge, students will be assigned homework by their classroom teacher in the core subject areas (i.e. Reading, Writing, Math, Social Studies, and Science) regularly. The homework will increase in rigor and expectation as the students progress from Transitional Kindergarten through each grade and up through eighth grade. An additional benefit of having our students engage in their learning at home is that we also want to provide opportunities for our students to build their habits of mind including time management, organization, and endurance. At Sunol Glen, we are dedicated to also imbuing in our students that learning is a lifelong endeavor and occurs in all kinds of life situations and experiences beyond the brick-and-mortar school building. Homework is assigned to students on an individual basis by teachers. Assignments may be nightly, weekly, or for an extended time. Nightly homework will never be new work but will reinforce work presented in the classroom. Homework is intended to be completed at Home. Home and school work together for the ultimate good of students; homework must be a shared effort - our homework policy reflects the following understanding: ● Homework is to be accomplished at a convenient time for the family. ● Homework is to be checked and signed by a parent. Any mistakes are to be corrected by students before the assignment is turned in at school. ● Homework is the responsibility of the student. Students who experience difficulties with homework should not be kept at the task until frustrated but should be encouraged to stop. A note from a parent to the teacher asking for further clarification should be sent. ● Students failing to complete homework assignments will be assigned study hall or in-class work time.
